You’re attacking your own example instead of the abstract premise. You’re not seeing the point.
By copying your song, or your painting, or your patent…I have not taken anything from you. The originals still exist. You are still free to sell them and do as you please with them.
In the case of the paper, it’s obviously a dick move and can easily be rectified by going to the professor of the class. Remember that it shouldn’t be illegal to copy things but that doesn’t mean private institutions can’t act against those who do. Giving someone an F for plagiarizing a paper or canceling a contract with a band because it turns out their music is a direct carbon copy of someone else’s earlier work is completely fine.

If someone takes a paper you write for school, and turns it in with their name on it, because they couldn’t do it on their own, isn’t that theft also? Again, I mean it in the sense of taking without the others consent.
The difference here is, I can’t “take your idea”. If I copy a song, I haven’t taken anything from you. You still have your copy.
The paper is different. I’ve taken the paper itself. If I just copied the words and ideas, it’s not theft. Theft is to *deny* somebody else access to their own property.
